Combat Camera Pacific – 2006 Mercy Deployment

Part 05

After a brief supply stop in Singapore, I was part of the Advance Coordination Team that was flown to the Mercy’s next humanitarian stop to Bangladesh.  I documented the preparations for Mercy’s arrival as well as it’s one week stay to provide a multitude of medical and dental care to the people who live in this region.  My Photo staff and I covered “Mercy Technicians” as they made repairs to medical equipment, hospital facilities and clinics, and documented Mercy’s instructors provide valuable training to the local medical professionals.  Joining the crew of the Mercy at this time were the medical teams of Operation Smile, Project Hope and the Pre-Dental Exchange Program of the University of California, San Diego.  I loved covering these groups who did some amazing work for the people here, especially the care that was done for the children.

CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh – (June 29 – July 04, 2006)

The USNS Mercy’s (T-AH 19) one week stay will provide people who live in this region a multitude of medical, dental and veterinary care, as well as repairs to medical equipment and hospital facilities.  Mercy’s stop in Chittagong is the fourth operational port during its humanitarian deployment to South and Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands.  Mercy is able to rapidly respond to a range of situations on short notice and is capable of supporting medical and humanitarian assistance needs with special medical equipment and a multi-specialized medical team, providing a range of services ashore as well as aboard the ship.  The medical staff is augmented with an assistance crew, many of whom are part of non-governmental organizations that have significant medical capabilities including Project Hope, Operation Smile, and the Pre-Dental student exchange program of the University of California, San Diego.
