USS Kitty Hawk – 1985 to 1988
My first assignment in the U.S. Navy was on board the USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), home ported in San Diego, California. While there, I qualified as shipboard aerial cameraman flying aerial missions on the H-3 Sea-King helicopter. I met the ship in the Philippines during its 1985 “West-Pac” deployment to the Indian Ocean, and in 1987 I deployed again on the ships World Cruise. I was promoted to the rank of Second Class Petty Officer, and concluded my tour shortly after the ship entered into the Service-Life Extension Program at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.
